“BMW X5: Is version 2.0 the Ultimate Driving sport-utility vehicle?” asks Road & Track in its one-page review of BMW’s second-generation, 2007 model year X5. Having reflected at quite some length (the X5 has been out since last October), R&T concludes, “For those who can afford a vehicle of this sort, the all-new X5 will reward with the traditionally rich BMW driving experience in the sport-utility segment.”
Writer Jim Hall says BMW nicely addressed complaints about the first-generation X5, particularly limited cargo room and and a “somewhat” harsh ride. This version “retains all of the sporty handling charcgeristics of the first version but with much more compliant-feeling road manners.”
The drivetrain is “luxury-sedan refined” and the active steering system is “vastly improved over the ones we’ve sampled in BMW’s sedans.” The story explores once again BMW’s penchant for calling an SUV an SAV and notes that options, particularly tech-oriented checkoffs such as navigation systems, rear seat entertainment, and backup cameras, can add up to $10,000 in no time.
