X6 SUVThe all-new X5 is an able machine that, you will feel, has the potential to be taken so much further. You cannot be fooled by the unusual disguise at the rear of the car. It is there to fool us quite comprehensively, for beneath it lies one of the most remarkable shapes. It’s an SUV coupe, it’s the Range Rover Sport, x100.

How extreme it is looks apparent even beneath the disguise check out how the camouflage drops down as it heads rearwards. With a lofty stance, sharply-creased curves and massive alloys, drama doesn’t begin to describe the car that we and our artist anticipate. Even fully-clad, comparing it to the X5 that’s following in our scoop shots reveals the athleticism.

The X5-based machine will employ the same well-honed platform, but should drive even more ably thanks to a lower centre of gravity and, possibly, a wider track. We couldn’t get BMW to confirm that it would use the 507bhp 5.0-litre V10 ‘M’ engine, but would certainly expect to see the 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel, and maybe a larger V8 turbo too.

Adaptive Drive should be a must-have option that BMW may standardise, but don’t look for X5-like practicality. When it arrives in 2008, the X6 will be a strict four-seater. Even so, if Porsche isn’t worried, we think they should be.
