BMW is going to be changing a few key elements. For years they have been using the high revving and normally aspirated engines in their M models – but this will change. They will be taking a new direction and instead start offering the direct-injection turbocharged power plants in these high performance models.

The automaker stated that because of the tougher environmental emission standards and the increase in manufacturing costs something had to change. It is just too expensive and no longer practical to be producing large amounts of their specially designed V8 and V10 engines that can be found in the M3, M5, and M6 models.

The X6 xDrive M will be the first M model to carry the brand new turbocharged engines. It will be produced with a 4.4 liter V8 engine that can produce 500 horsepower and 516 pound-ft of torque. Reports from BMW lead us to believe that this same engine will be placed in the F10 chassis M5 – which we will see late in 2010.

Dinan is known to produce cars that go above and beyond the normal range of performance. Their latest production is the M3 that they equipped with a V8 derived 5 liter V10 engine that can also be found in the M5 and M6 and has won a few awards.

The eight replaced the inline-six on the previous model, but instead of remaining content to say “good job on the extra two cylinders”, Dinan asks what happened to the extra two from the V10. Not that they would have been happy with the V10, either. On that, Dinan pushed and pushed, boring and stroking out the engine’s ten cylinders until they got it up to 5.7 liters and 628 horsepower. Pretty sick, but saddled with the heft of a BMW 5 or 6.

Word has it now that Dinan is preparing to shoehorn in its 628-hp concoction into the M3’s engine bay. Thankfully they’ll be lightening it up a little after that, removing some of the bulk from the front end in order to keep the weight balance in check.

It is true that the M6 has power added to it – but when it comes down to it we could all use more power. BMW knows this and that is why they will be adding on more power to their M division with the new Competition Package.

It will be getting a brand new active suspension with a ride height that has been lowered by up to 10mm in the back and 12mm in the front. It has also been equipped with a new front hood and new wheels.

With or without the Competition Package, however, the entire M6 range (coupe and convertible) gets new side mirrors, a new electronics package controlled by the revised iDrive system and a new shade of black for the exterior.

It will be the first one we have seen since 2004. The new CSL will be a high performance and lightweight car that will be able to save 100 kilograms over the stock M3. This is possible with the use of carbon fiber and carbon fiber reinforced plastic.

The new CSL will be getting new suspension, better tires, and few engine upgrades that could raise the horsepower by 50. This increase could enable it to rev from 0 to 62 mph close to 4.5 seconds.

Expect the newest CSL to run well into the six figure territory for asking price, and to sell in limited runs of a few thousand or less.

BMW’s new M6 Hurricane is getting the same treatment as the M5 – which means that it will be given the same G-power 5.0 liter V10 engine that makes it such a great ride. The new engine has been set for a low 6 psi compared to the 10 psi in the M5 – but it still has the ability to produce 635 bhp at 7300 rpm.

This is good for a 4.5 second sprint to 60 mph and a top speed of nearly 200 mph. Not one to forget that appearance matters, G-Power also provides a new front and rear fascia, rocker panels, and carbon fiber rear diffuser along with 21-inch wheels that make room for a 15-inch brake system up front. M6 owners can drop off their car at G-Power’s German headquarters or can order a fully assembled car starting at a mere 183,000 Euros.

CAR magazine has an exclusive interview with Herbert Diess – a BMW board member for the July edition. In the interview the executive states that the M1 Hommage concept is going in to production. Diess says, “We have the know-how, we have the right engine, we even have the infrastructure to build such a car.”

The Brit pub gives up a few teasers about the mid-engine supercar, namely that it won’t be called the M1, BMW’s plan to fit “heron-wing” doors and a powertrain line-up that will include three engine choices. On that last bit, we’d suspect that the twin-turbo’d 3.0-liter engine would be a suitable entry-level mill, followed by the M3’s V8 and the M5/M6’s V10, with the latter benefiting from a duo of turbochargers. It’s all speculation at this point, so we’ll have to wait for the July issue to hit UK newsstands tomorrow, with sales in the U.S. beginning later this week.

Many debates have begun over a spy photograph that was taken of what appears to be a BMW M1 prototype. The problem is we aren’t sure is it is the real thing or a really creative rendering. FreshTarmac.com reported that the photo was snapped in a hangar in Spain.

As we can see from the picture (if it’s real) the prototype is something to look at. The design that it sports is sleek and a perfect example of why BMW is so well respected and popular among many people. It looks like a mid-engine coupe that has pulled some design techniques from the M3. We are hoping that if this is the real thing that BMW is possibly thinking about creating a productive version of the M1 Hommage Concept that was debuted just last week at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este.

If anyone knows how to celebrate it is BMW. They celebrated the 30th birthday of the iconic M1 during the Concorso d’Eleganza by creating a brand new concept car that was designed and made to pay tribute to the M1.

The BMW M1 Hommage blends a wide, aggressive stance with intentionally retro/modern twists on the key visual elements that defined Paul Bracq’s original BMW Turbo concept and the Giugiaro-designed M1 homologation special that followed. It is instantly recognizable as an M1, particularly in profile, where the M1 Hommage’s basic shape clearly mimics that of its forebear. BMW’s stylists also incorporated similar nods the particulars of the original, such as the louvered rear window; the badge placement in back; the line extending aft from the side glass; and even the wheel design, which is an exaggerated take on the ones you’ll find on the original road car.

Poring over the details of the Homage is akin to going on an Easter Egg hunt. The greatest departure is seen in front, where BMW has given the M1 Hommage a sinister, imposing face. Naturally, BMW’s prominent double-kidney grille is front and center. Its joined by outboard intakes and a trapezoidal lower opening designed to swallow and direct air for both cooling purposes and aerodynamic effect. The car’s four round headlights lurk behind thin slits in the front fascia, remaining essentially invisible until they’re illuminated — a tip of the cap to the hideaway nature of the classic M1’s flip-up lamps.

There appears to be no interior, and BMW doesn’t even bother mentioning specific powertrain possibilities. The M1 Hommage is strictly a design exercise meant to celebrate an icon, but it also reminds us that Munich can do the supercar thing, too. Maybe one day it will again.

The BMW dealer in Lincoln, Nebraska is using the power of eBay to increase their sales and to show consumers what they can offer. In order to do this they placed one of their brand new M3’s on the auction block for $60,000. They expected the price to go up a few figures – but were disappointed when someone won it for the exact listed price.

A man in California won the brand new M3 for the listed price of $60,000 – but now the dealer is backing out of the agreement and doesn’t want to give it up. It didn’t take long till after the auction had closed for the manager at the BMW location in Nebraska to call up the lucky winner and tell him that the auction was “a mistake”.

Fortuantely for winner – Dooma350 – eBay can prove that the company was very much aware of the auction because they had changed the ‘Buy It Now’ price twice. This means that they need to abide by the contract and rules of eBay that state that they need to pay up to the winner. We hope he gets what he paid for.

The goal: Make larger vehicles without increasing weight. The result: Next generation M3. The engineers were able to accomplish something that seems like it would be impossible to do. The built a stronger and larger model of the M3, but still managed to cut the weight by 7% when compared to the previous model.

In an Inside Line interview with Gerhard Richter, vice president, BMW M Gmbh, yet another iteration of the still lighter CSL is a dead-lock guarantee. It seems BMW has figured out that people will pay more for increased agility that doesn’t necessarily include monster horsepower.

Now that we know the M3 CSL will always have a place in the Bimmer lineup, the only question left is when, what kind of diet we’re talking about, and how much it’s going to cost. We’d be happy with a run of the mill M3 until those answers become available.
