ZF Friedrichshafen will be giving BMW and Audi the transmission they need to compete with Lexus. We heard last month that the two automakers were trying to come out with eight-speed automatic transmissions in the new flagship models in order to compete with the models that Lexus has been creating.
According to the details we have (and there are few right now) BMW will be showing off their new gearbox in the premium 7-Series sedan as well as the X6 Sport Activity Vehicle. The current BMW 7-Series car uses six-speed automatics.
BMW is has decided to launch their new four door coupes in 2010. The Gran Turismo will be their flagship model sedan. Gergard Richter has been placed in charge with how to design the new model by taking some cues from the CS concept that was shown off last year at the Shanghai Auto Show.
The Gran Turismo would slot in above the 7-series, being both longer and wider than BMW’s largest sedan, and is likely to pack either a V8 or V12 powerplant. CSM Worldwide pegs production of around 15,000 units annually with a cost of around $150,000.
BMW’s Hydrogen 7 Limited Edition vehicle seems to be making a big splash – especially in the world of the rich and famous. People are lining up to take a spin in the new vehicle in January when it arrives in Australia. Those people lining up are some of the largest stars and politicians who are eager to experience the great ride for themselves.
Australian actors Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush have already had a drive in the US and are bound to be part of the action when the emission-free limousine arrives here for lease-only evaluation. Other stars who have sat behind the wheel of the hydrogen limo include Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Richard Gere, Jay Leno, and Placido Domingo.
