Do you know what BMW stands for? If you don’t, BMW stands for ‘Bayerische Motoren Werke AG’, or as it is in English, Bavarian Motor Works. Whichever you’d like to call it, BMW is still known as one of the greatest and most respected automakers. BMW is in the business of crafting SUVs and luxury cars that raises the level of your driving enjoyment many notches higher.

The BMW history shows that the company was founded in Munich around the early 1910s, not for manufacturing cars, but for manufacturing aircraft. You can tell the origins of BMW because of its current logo, meant to be white propeller blades set against a nice blue sky. The blue and white also represents Bavaria’s blue-and-white checked flag.

So when did BMW start manufacturing automobiles? It was only in 1928 that the first BMW automobile’s production began. It was called the Dixi. It had a positive click with the people, becoming so popular and successful that the company was able to get itself through the Depression.

When the 1970s came around, BMW was becoming a full-fledged automobile company. It pioneered the numerous new technologies that were emerging during the time; this includes no less than advanced vehicle electronics and turbocharging. By then, the BMW in North America was also fast becoming established, and many people who loved luxury cars and sports cars became loyal owners of “Bimmer” cars. The spread of BMW’s fame remains something to be admired, as the company’s performance continues moving up.

Most successful companies never desire to stay at the same level, but they always move on to the next level: expansion. That’s what BMW has been doing recently, spreading its arms wide to reach places worldwide. Its first US manufacturing plant was opened in the later half of the 1990s; its brand was expanded to include Mini and Rolls-Royce. Not only does BMW produce cars, but the company also builds motorcycles, which had started way back in the 1920s.

“The ultimate driving machine” is BMW’s known advertising slogan, and it describes each of their vehicles faithfully. Over the decades, BMW’s standard of elegance and performance is something that is not very easy to reach. They have wagons for families, sleek sedans, coupes, sports cars and SUVs to offer, making up a very diverse list. Despite the diversity, BMW’s luxury vehicles are the same in the way they forge connection between the driver and the road.
